Welcome to PHD Program on Astrophysics, Cosmology and Gravitation (PPGCosmo) at Ufes

  • In this line of research, we address the problems of dark matter and dark energy investigating modified gravitation models, models with noncanonical scalar fields, backreaction models, dark sector interaction models and unified dark matter models. We look for typical signatures for each class of these models and we try to rule them out on the basis of current and future observational data. It is hoped to obtain more robust evidence on the nature of dark matter and energy. The tests of theoretical cosmological models using the different available observational data include CMB, large-scale correlation of structures, weak lenses and correlations between these observables. Analysis of modified theories of gravitation contemplates Horndenski's gravitation, the non-conservative theory of Rastall and models of gravitation with twist and Weyl. In this line of research we also deal with the cosmological Inflation of its observational signatures in CMB. In particular, we investigate extensions of the Starobinsky model and Linde's alpha-Attractors. In addition to inflation models, we are also interested in scenarios in which there is no singularity (Big Bang) but a bouncing universe. In this case we focus on the predictions about the scalar and tensorial spectra and their marks on the cosmic background radiation.

  • In this line of research we approach the study of the evidence of the presence of dark matter in galaxies, using as main observable the rotation curves. We investigated the small-scale agglomeration properties of dark matter and the relative small-scale anomalies, such as the cusp/core problem, the problem of missing satellites, and the problem "too big to fail". From the theoretical point of view, we study modified gravitation models such as MOND, TeVeS and conforming gravity. In extra-galactic scales, we investigate the dynamics of galaxies in clusters of galaxies and the role developed by dark matter. We analyze the evidence for the existence of dark matter, and the influence of dark energy on the virialized cosmic structures. We have also developed numerical and semi-analytical simulations for the formation of cosmic structures.

  • Solutions of gravitational equations. Structures of black holes, their stability and causal structure. Thermodynamics of black holes. Particle production in an expanding universe. Formulation of cosmological models from the quantum cosmology and quantum cosmology of loops. Curved space-time quantum theory. Quantization of gravitation.

Course history
The doctoral program on Astrophysics, Cosmology and Gravity (PPGCosmo) was endorsed during a meeting of CTC of CAPES in april 2016. Afterwards, it was also endorsed by UFES University Board, being allowed to start right after that. The course is located at UFES, in charge of the issuance of pertaining diplomas. PPGCosmo involves, in its early stage, as permanent members, reaserchers from UFES, Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Físicas (CBPF), UFJF and UFBA, Abroad, PPGCosmo has collaborators such as researchers from Fermilab (USA), Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur (OCA, France), Universität Heildelberg (Germany) and Portsmouth University (UK).

All such institutions involved in this course already had their post graduate courses on Physics when PPGCosmo was created. With this in mind, PPGCosmo intends to develop a course more specifically designed to prevent countering the already existing ones. The main motivation with PPGCosmo is co-orientation of students by researchers in Brazil and abroad, during all the the course, targeting the inclusion of the students into the international scientific environment.

In August 2016, the first selection of doctoral applicants was performed; four being chosen and making up the initial quota of 4 grants awarded by CAPES.

The program is based in the capital of Espirito Santo, Vitoria, offering the course of Doctorate degree on Astrophysics, Cosmology and Gravity since 2016 and has an academic qualification profile certified by CAPES, receiving 5 on its last evaluation.

The program counts with 5 students regularly enrolled, all being in the doctorate.
