Solidarity, nucleation and visibility

Solidarity:

The program involves seven Brazilian institutions: one in Espírito Santo (UFES, with two campuses), others in Minas Gerais (UFJF, UFOP), Bahia (UFBA), Rio de Janeiro (CBPF), São Paulo (UNESP, ICTP-SAIFR), and Paraná (UFPR). However, PPGCosmo also aims to promote the strengthening of new research groups in the area. For example, one member of PPGCosmo is a professor at the advanced campus of UFES in northern Espírito Santo, in São Mateus, where efforts are underway to establish a theoretical physics group.

PPGCosmo is responsible for organizing three series of conferences:

  1. The José Plínio Baptista School of Cosmology, held in even years, usually in Espírito Santo.
  2. The Quantum Summer, which takes place in odd years, also typically in Espírito Santo.
  3. Estate Quantistica, held in even years, generally in Italy. This event is co-organized with the Université de Bourgogne (France) and the Università di Napoli (Italy).
  4. The Antônio Brasil Batista Workshop, which provides a comprehensive overview of current issues in Astrophysics, Cosmology, and Gravitation and is strategic as it creates a setting for in-person meetings of the program's collaborative network.

Organizing these events also facilitates the creation of new partnerships and scientific collaborations.

Nucleation:

In addition to the previously mentioned activities involving lectures for elementary and high schools during event organization, members of PPGCosmo develop Junior Scientific Initiation activities involving high school students. There is currently an ongoing project titled "Cataloging and Analysis of Astronomical Objects." This project involves the IFES of Guarapari, with 10 high school students participating from this institution.

Every year, we also organize a physics event at IFES in Cariacica, typically in November, which serves as an opportunity to bring together students and teachers from that institution with faculty, researchers, and students from UFES. More information is available on the Cosmo-Ufes Center website: https://www.cosmo-ufes.org.

Visibility:

The visibility of the program can be enhanced in several ways, including:

  1. Engagement with primary and secondary education through lectures, courses, and similar activities.
  2. Public outreach activities, consisting mainly of public lectures at venues outside the university, promoting courses and scientific dissemination seminars for the general public, and hosting open astronomical observation sessions.
  3. Promotion of conferences aimed at the broader academic community. Currently, PPGCosmo organizes the Quantum Summer, the José Plínio Baptista School of Cosmology, and the Brazil Workshop as regular activities, alongside more occasional events.
  4. Research seminar cycles and academic outreach events. At present, we have a weekly research seminar program and a monthly academic outreach seminar.
  5. Proactive participation in activities promoted by other institutions and scientific societies.
